One purchase, no account,
not much to agree to.

These are the terms for buying and using Subtitles. They are short because the app has no account, no server and nothing to collect, which removes most of what a document like this usually has to cover. The privacy policy says what happens to data; this page says what you are buying.

What you are buying

A licence to use Subtitles on Macs you own or control, for as long as you like. It is a one-time payment of $9, not a subscription, and every future update is included. There is nothing to renew and no account to keep alive, because the app never checks in with anything after the first run.

Buying it, and the refund

The app is sold through Gumroad, who are the merchant of record. They take the payment, handle tax, and issue receipts and refunds under their terms and their privacy policy. Your payment details never reach anything I run.

There is a 14-day refund and you do not have to give a reason for it. Ask Gumroad support and it is done. If the app will not run on your Mac at all, ask for the refund rather than for support: the requirements below are absolute and no update will change them.

What it is not

This is the part worth reading before buying, because these are limits rather than gaps and none of them is going to change.

It is not a record. Nothing is written to disk, so there is no transcript, no export and no history beyond what is on screen. If a conversation has to be documented, this is the wrong tool and it will not become the right one.
It is not a medical device and not a clinical service. Nothing in the app or on this site diagnoses anything or treats anything, including the pages about hearing.
It is not a substitute for a human captioner or interpreter. For a medical appointment, a legal meeting, a class you are assessed on, or anywhere being wrong has a cost, a professional is the accommodation and you are entitled to ask for one.
It is speech recognition, so it is wrong sometimes. Names, jargon, crosstalk and heavy accents are where it slips. Do not act on a caption you could not verify.
What you do with the captions is yours. The microphone is never opened and nothing is stored, but reading what other people say still happens in a context with rules. Local law on recording and transcribing conversations is yours to know and follow.

What it needs

Apple silicon and macOS 14.2 or later. The whole app is built on Core Audio process taps, which arrived in 14.2, so an Intel Mac cannot run it at all. About 600 MB of disk for the speech model, fetched once on first run.

The source and the model

The source is published under FSL-1.1-ALv2, which becomes Apache 2.0 two years after each release. That licence governs the code; this page governs the app you bought. The speech model is third-party weights, downloaded on first run and used under the licence its authors publish.

Warranty, liability and changes

The app is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. As far as the law allows, liability for any claim arising from using it is limited to what you paid for it. None of this removes rights you have under consumer law where you live.

These terms may change as the app does, and a change is never applied backwards to a purchase already made. Anything unclear here is worth asking about on the contact page, and the answer usually ends up on this page afterwards.

These terms are governed by French law, where the company is registered. If you bought this as a consumer, that choice does not remove the protections of the law where you live, and it does not stop you bringing a dispute before the courts of your own country.

Who you are buying from

Subtitles is published and sold by CSS LABS. When you buy the app you are contracting with the company rather than with me personally, and it is the company that Gumroad pays. I am its only employee, which is why the rest of this site says "I".
